Product of the Year 2020: the results
The final round of voting has closed and a winner has been chosen in our annual Readers’ Choice Awards! Beginning in December, DPR readers picked their favorite cameras, zoom lenses and prime lenses released in 2020. The winners of that initial round of voting were then pitted against each other for the title of Product of the Year. Take a look and see which products came out on top.
Third place (joint): Nikon Z 50mm F1.2 S
We know you hate it when products are tied, but when two lenses take third place with an exactly identical share of the vote, that’s what you get! The Nikon Z 50mm F1.2 S is a new addition to Nikon’s Z-series lens lineup, offering excellent sharpness and pleasant rendering, for low-light and everyday shooting alike (as long as you don’t mind the size and weight).
Most Z-series shooters will be happy with the more affordable 50mm F1.8 S, but for those who need that extra speed, the Z 50mm F1.2 S is a great option.
Third place (joint): Sony FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM
Taking an exactly equal portion of the total vote (12.5%, stats fans) the Sony FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM cemented its position in this year’s Readers’ Choice polls as one of the best lenses of 2020. With a focal length range that can encompass everything from tight interiors to sweeping landscapes, we love this wide zoom for its versatility and sharpness, and clearly you feel the same. Here’s to more landscapes in 2021 (and fewer interiors)!
Runner up: Fujifilm X-T4
Another perennial favorite of DPReview readers (and reviewers) in 2020 was the Fujifilm X-T4, which combines a powerful stills photography feature set with some serious video chops. The X-T4 is one of our favorite mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras, and it took runner-up spot in this year’s Readers’ Choice awards with 23.6% of the vote.
Winner: Canon EOS R5
There can be only one overall winner (except when two products get the same share of the vote of course, but let’s not get into that again) and this year the clear #1 was the Canon EOS R5. Taking almost exactly a third of the total vote, the R5 was confirmed in this year’s polls as one of the most significant – and popular – products of 2020 for our readers.
For many of you, the R5 signified a return to form from Canon after a few years where the company had seemed rather cautious. There’s no way that anyone could make that criticism of the EOS R5.
Thanks for voting!
